Christian Punk Band: Christian Punk Band EP

Make no mistake, the Christian Punk Band is not a DIY bible-thumping band masking religious mumblings with loud. The Toronto truio is named after main songwriter Christian Turner who has toiling in the music business for nearly two decades. Sharing a love for melody Jeff Takahashi and Jon Lubanski bring his songs alive on a new self-titled EP taking cues from Sixties garage and surf music.

Fame and fortune have eluded then so far and this release won't change that, but fans of underground punk will appreciate their energy and perseverance.

Angela James: Way Down Deep

Alt-country Angela James likes to throw in a bit of jazz into her old school songs. Her new album Way Down Deep goes beyond the boundaries of Americana. With a small core band - husband Jordan Martins. on guitar and bass and Charles Rumback on drums - plus a variety of guest players James goes for a subdued approach that has more bite than many far louder albums.

She likes to take risks and included three one take wonders recorded live at Comfort Station in her hometown Chicago, including the a cappella title track. Exquisite noise from Florida. Jacksonville based instrumental trio moyamoya (Japanese for "a puff of smoke") are into smoldering soundscapes augmented with loud-quiet-loud guitar vignettes and keyboard textures. To keep it fresh the band switched instruments. Bassist Richard Dudley plays guitar. Guitarist Scott Madgett is on drums and Brennan Hamill, also a guitarist, handles keys and bass. The result: no stock chords, fills and progressions.

By stepping out of their comfort zone moyamoya had to feel their way through the songs, playing by ear to the max, with each musician trying to find a space. Post-rock as a genre is a balancing act - promising musical ideas can get lost in endless repetitive noodling, but when it's done right it makes groundbreaking, captivating listening. Recommended if you like The Fierce and the Dead, Mogwai and God Speed You! Black Emperor.

The Homesick, a trio from Dokkum, The Netherlands, are into demented lo-fi neo-psychedelica. Their new EP Twst yr Wrsts sounds like a side project by Captain Beefheart, Jacco Gardner and Tame Impala. Throw in above average funny lyrics and these guys have a recipe for underground fame. Pretty rare for an act to be seriously of out of tune and get away it.

HCTF review of We Have Just The Life We Want.

Able Archer: The Trouble with Strangers

Have Dublin alternative rockers Able Archer gone soft? After the fist pumping single Ghostmaker all signs pointed to an energetic EP. The Trouble with Strangers turns out to be a far more complex release. With the orchestrated (trumpet, strings) slow songs The Warden and The Descent and off-kilter time changes in Only Love (power pop meets Spear of Destiny) they have expanded their musical palette. It'll be interesting to know what they will be come up with for the next one.

Kaki King: Everybody Glows: B​-​Sides & Rarities

Brooklyn guitarist Kaki King has assembled a bunch of good sounding demos, outtakes, live cuts and covers for her new album Everybody Glows: B​-​Sides & Rarities. Revered among fellow musicians for her craftsmanship and great tone, her vocals tend to be overlooked. Turns out she can a handle Close To You rather well. But it's her mastery of the acoustic guitar that make this album more than a stop-gap release. This week's assignment: dissect one of the tracks, including the tuning she used. Class dismissed.

Yinka Oyewole: Whirlwind Since The Day

Nigerian singer Yinka Oyewole covers a lot of ground on his new album Whirlwind Since The Day. Despite all his genre hopping - afrobeat, hip-hop, rock, funk - all his songs deal with danger of some sort: hostile big city surroundings in Stop! Breathe, the innocence of a lost Little Hipster Girl, drugs and alcohol in Poison.

With a powerful voice halfway between Terrence Trent D'Arby and Seal, Oyewole's message might be heard by people who usually don't pay much attention to lyrics. They are in for a surprise when they do.

Iggy Pop: BBC Music John Peel Lecture

Iggy Pop delivered this year's John Peel lecture. He shared his thoughts on the current state of the music industry ans stresses the importance of not being in it just for the money.

We are now in the age of the schemer and the plan is always big, big, big, but it's the nature of the technology created in the service of the various schemes that the pond, while wide, is very shallow. Nobody cares about anything too deeply expect money. Running out of it, getting it. I never sincerely wanted to be rich. There is a, in the US, we have this guy “Do you sincerely wanna be rich? You can do it!” I didn’t sincerely want to be rich. I never sincerely felt like making anyone else that way. That made me a kind of a wild card in the 60's and 70's. I got into the game because it felt good to play and it felt like being free. I'm still hearing today about how my early works with The Stooges were flops. But they're still in print and they sell 45 years later, they sell. Okay, it took 20 or 25 years for the first royalties to roll in. So sue me.

To start with, I cannot stress enough the importance of study. I was lucky to work in a discount record store in Ann Arbor Michigan as a stock boy where I was exposed to a little bit of every form of music imaginable on record at the time. I listened to it all whether I liked it or not. Be curious. And I played in my high school orchestra and I learned the joy of the warm organic instruments working together in the service of a classical piece. That sticks with you forever. If anyone out there can get a chance to put an instrument and some knowledge in some kids hand, you've done a great, great thing.

Todd Tobias: Impossible Cities

Dream up a city and write a song about it. Ohio experimentalist Todd Tobias created sixteen cities, each of them with a different character, but none of them is located somewhere sunny. Most dreams turned into nightmares. Tobias' Impossible Cities are scary places, with overflowing dumpsters and something nasty lurking tin the shadows, Stepford wives reinvented as zombies, the curtain dropped for the Truman Show to show a void, an abyss or a suburb that breeds school shooters.

Tobias is an explorer who invents his own paths when he has run out of real life ones. Using post-rock as his stepping stone he is a musical architect, using swirls of keyboards and repetitive rhythm to map out his blueprints. Impossible Cities is a captivating work that should be played at top volume before a meeting of the city council discussing ill-fated expansion schemes.

Impossible Cities will be released in Holland on Tiny Room Records. Release date: October 28th. The rest of the world can buy it from his website.

The Good Graces: Close to the Sun

Atlanta, GA indie folk collective The Good Graces has only one permanent member: lead singer and guitarist Kim Ware. For her new album Close to the Sun she called in a few favours from her friends to help her out, but it's first and foremost her vision on dreamy folk rock with an edge.

Ware can switches moods at drop of a beat. She isn't afraid to speak up - the college rock anthem Standing in Line, is perfectly capable of channeling a Johnny Cash meets spaghetti Western (Parts > Sum) can be surprisingly gentle (I Don't Know Where to Start and Cold in California). Recommended if you like Belly, Throwing Muses and Amy Correia.

Close to the Sun will be released on vinyl (500 copies) on October 28 as a collaborative effort by Fort Lowell Records and PotLuck Foundation. Also available as a digital download.
